What We Heard on the Ground at OTE 2026

In This Blog

  • OTE 2026 united Canada’s transit industry — agencies, operators, manufacturers, and technology providers gathered in Toronto to tackle real-world operational challenges and explore practical solutions.
  • Transit agencies are navigating complex system transitions — common themes included integrating legacy systems with newer technology, improving real-time data visibility, and streamlining cross-team coordination.
  • Cybersecurity emerged as a critical transit priority — a leadership session moderated by Vontas explored how ransomware, phishing, and supply chain vulnerabilities directly threaten service reliability and rider trust.
  • Electrification and operational technology took center stage — OTE 2026 showcased the latest advancements in vehicle systems and transit tech, giving attendees a hands-on look at solutions built for modern operations.
  • Vontas connected with transit agencies on integration and implementation — booth conversations focused on how quickly teams can adopt new tools, what implementation looks like, and how Vontas fits into existing transit environments.

The Ontario Transportation Expo (OTE) 2026 brought the bus and transit industry together in Toronto for a few days of hands-on exploration, direct conversations, and practical problem-solving. As one of the largest gatherings of its kind in Canada, OTE continues to stand out for its focus on real-world operations. Agencies, operators, manufacturers, and technology providers all come together with a shared goal: figure out how to improve service, strengthen operations, and move the industry forward.

For Vontas, this year’s event was an opportunity to connect directly with transit agencies and be part of those conversations.

A Show Floor Built Around Real Conversations

The event’s trade show floor was filled with a mix of vehicle displays, technology solutions, and supplier booths, creating an environment where attendees could easily move between seeing equipment up close and having in-depth discussions about how it performs in real-world conditions.

At the Vontas booth, we had many conversations around how agencies are managing day-to-day complexity. We learned that most teams are balancing legacy systems with newer technologies, trying to improve visibility while keeping operations running smoothly. The discussions were specific and practical and reflected the realities agencies are working through now:

Here are a few common questions we answered at the event:

  • How does Vontas integrate with what we already have?
  • What does implementation look like?
  • How quickly can teams start using it effectively?

What We Heard from Transit Agencies

Across conversations throughout the event, a few consistent themes came up:

  • Improving reliability while working within tight constraints
  • Better coordination across systems and teams, especially as operations become more connected
  • The challenge of turning data into actionable insights in real time
  • Bringing multiple systems into alignment and simplifying operations

OTE provided the space for these challenges to be discussed openly, with input from both peers and partners.

Cybersecurity Took Center Stage

One of the most timely moments of the event was the Leadership Stream session moderated by Vontas’ Sabah Lone, which focused on the intersection of cybersecurity and customer experience. The conversation brought together voices from across the industry to discuss how cyber threats are emerging in transit operations today. Ransomware, phishing attempts, and supply chain vulnerabilities were all part of the discussion.

What stood out was how closely these issues are tied to service delivery. When systems are disrupted, operations are immediately impacted. That disruption affects reliability, communication, and ultimately rider trust. The session focused on how agencies and partners can work together to strengthen resilience, improve response strategies, and better protect both systems and the passenger experience.

Transit Innovation in Action

OTE is known for showcasing the latest advancements in the bus and transit industry, and this year was no exception. Across the show floor, there was a strong presence of new technologies related to electrification, vehicle systems, and operational tools. Attendees had the chance to see these solutions in action and speak directly with the teams behind them.

Throughout the event, agencies asked how solutions would fit into their current environments, how they would scale, and what impact they would have on daily operations. At Vontas, those conversations inspire our teams to build solutions that support how agencies operate today while helping them move forward with confidence.

Why OTE Matters

Events like OTE play an important role in the transit industry because they bring together the people who are responsible for making systems work every day. They create opportunities for direct, one-on-one conversations that go deeper than what’s possible in other settings, and allow agencies to explore solutions hands-on, ask detailed questions, and learn from others facing similar challenges.

As OTE 2026 came to a close, there was a clear sense of direction across the industry. Transit agencies are focused on improving operations, strengthening resilience, and finding practical ways to adapt to change. The conversations in Toronto created a strong emphasis on what can be done today to move forward. We’re looking forward to continuing those conversations at Vontas and building on what started at OTE
